Born Joseph Michael Maciariello, May 9, 1942, in Troy, New York. My father, Christopher, taught me how to play the cornet, and, at age 12, I had memorized and could perform all of the material in the Complete Arban-Clarke Method Book. I learned to play in my father’s city band, and I was selected for the New York State All-State Band in 1959. I earned a BS in Mathematics and Physics from Siena College in 1964, and an MS in Physics from SUNYA at Albany in 1965. I taught Physics and Chemistry at Mechanicville High School from September, 1965 until January, 1966. I then took a position at General Electric in Schenectady, New York. I worked as a Scientific Applications Programmer, Systems Analyst, Systems Designer, Operations Research Specialist, Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, and Manager of Valve Quality Control for the Large Steam Turbine Division. I earned a MS in Operations Research and Statistics from Union College in 1969. In 1972, I left GE to work on my doctorate in Systems Engineering at Union, where I was an Adjunct Professor of Operations Research and Statistics for eleven years.
In 1975, I switched careers and went into music education. I started at the junior high level, where I developed many fine young musicians. In 1980, my junior high wind ensemble, grades 7 – 9, competed in the NYSSMA band competition festival and earned a grade of A in Level 6 music. No other junior high group has ever achieved this feat. Subsequently, I moved on to the high school where I continued to develop outstanding concert bands and wind ensembles. I was in music education for 25 years, with short stints as Director of MIS for the school district, and an even shorter stint as owner of a California Closet franchise. I earned the MS in Educational Administration in 1988 from The College of St. Rose. I retired from teaching in 1998 at the age of 56. Three months later, I took a position as a consultant with ImageWork, a company in White Plains, NY, designing document imaging and workflow systems.
In 1994, I formed the Capital Region Music Educators Wind Ensemble. This group of 44 musicians was comprised of the finest musicians in the Albany-Glens Falls region, most of who were music educators as well as fine performers. I served as Music Director/Conductor for ten years. As life changed and I moved on to Venice, Florida, I turned over the organization to one of my colleagues. For more information on the CRWE, please visit The Capital Region Wind Ensemble.
My music performance career started at age twelve, where I played 1st chair Solo Cornet in my father’s concert band. Over the years, I played with many concert bands, big bands, symphony orchestras, as well as with many Broadway shows, including performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Albany Symphony Orchestra, The Schenectady Symphony Orchestra, and the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra (Asst. Prin.). I also founded and performed as 1st Trumpet with The Capital Brass Quintet for over 30 years, and I was 1st Trumpet with The Glens Falls Brass Quintet for 10 years. I performed as Cornet Soloist with the CRWE, the Saratoga Concert Band, and The Glens Falls Concert Band. Some musicians I performed with include Robert Merrill in “Fiddler”; Carol Channing in “Dolly”; Diane Carroll, Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme, Sonny and Cher, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Robert Shaw Chorale, Englebert Humperdink; Tom Jones; Jerry Lewis; Rita Moreno; Jack Fragomeni, Leo Russo and Nick Brignola, to name but a few. Currently living in Venice, Florida, I have worked with The Anna Maria Island Community Chorus and Orchestra, The Sarasota Concert Band, The Naples Philharmonic, The Dixie Spirit Jazz Band, The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, The Venice Symphony, and at several other local jazz venues.
My teachers include Chris Miller, Ruth Schiebler, Chris Izzo, Anthony Maiello, Armando Ghitalla, Frank Kaderabach, Bernard Adelstein and Vincent DiMartino.
